Maldives President quits amid protests
Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has resigned on February 7 after weeks of demonstrations and a mutiny by some police officers. Nasheed presented his resignation in a nationally televised address. He handed over power to Vice-President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, explaining that continuing in office would result in his having to use force against the people. Nasheed swept to victory in 2008, but drew opposition fire for his arrest of a judge he accused of being in the pocket of his predecessor Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who had ruled for 30 years.
