Poverty, child and maternal deaths still high in India, states UN Report
A United Nations report on 'Millennium Development Goals' stated that India continues to battle poverty, child and maternal deaths and sanitation, adding sustained efforts were required to cover the gap by 2015 deadline. Minority affairs minister, Najma Heptulla, while releasing the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) report on Wednesday said the four references in the report were not flattering. Many more goals are within reach by their 2015 target date, the report said, adding that if current trends continue, the world will surpass MDG targets on malaria, tuberculosis and access to HIV treatment. Meanwhile, an economist Jayati Ghosh said the government never paid heed to issue of poverty while preparing the annual budget.
